Trauma and EMDR Therapy
Trauma has been defined as “a threat we are not prepared to handle.” Car accidents, natural disasters, and cruel treatment can cause trauma, but any experience that causes us to feel intense fear, powerlessness or humiliation can leave a mark on us. Traumatic memories are intrusive, and often include re-experiencing the sensations, thoughts, and feelings associated with the original incident as though it were happening again. EMDR therapy is a well-researched and effective intervention for reducing the impact of negative past events on our future. We can help decrease anxiety, avoidance, and anger caused by experiencing or witnessing sexual and physical abuse, car accidents, violence in or out of the home, or medical or dental trauma. We can help the self doubt, confusion, and disconnection that prevents you from experiencing joy, love, and connection to others. We can help decrease panic attacks, phobias, nightmares, and insomnia related to traumatic experiences.
